A Guide to Installing an Interior Vent for a Dryer

No matter the type of energy that your dryer for your clothes uses, you are going to need an indoor vent for it.  This allows the hot and moist air to leave the dryer, and thereby assists in drying the clothes.  The vent is designed to allow the air to go outside, and in warmer weather you will appreciate this.  In the winter you may actually like the warm air being circulated back into your home.  The process of venting the air outside can pose a problem for those who are putting their dryer in a place that has never had one before.  This is because there is not going to be an access hole in the outside wall for you to run the vent through.  In this case you will need some information on installing an interior dryer vent.  After preparing the necessary tools and reading through the following, you will have a better understanding of how to do this. Items and tools that you will need:

  • The first thing you will need is a measuring tape.
  • Next you will need a hole saw.
  • Another necessary tool is a stud finder.
  • You will also need a pencil.
  • Caulking that is rated for outdoor use.
  • A drill will be necessary.
  • For the drill you will need both a 1/2 inch bit for masonry and a 1/2 inch bit for wood.

First – Ensuring the Way is Clear You don’t just want to go around making holes in the wall.  The first thing that you should do is to use the stud finder to ensure that you are not going to be putting a hole through a stud which is an important part of the structure holding up your house.  There are other things that you do not want to run into when you are making your hole as well.  These are things like the electrical lines, any gas lines, or your plumbing pipes.  All this will do is to create more work for you in the end.  You can find studs with your stud finder and use the pencil to make a light mark on your wall where there is anything in the way. Second – Marking Out Your Hole The area that you choose for your vent should be in between two studs.  Measure to the halfway point between the two and hold your hose for the dryer over that spot.  Now, draw a line around the hose while it is still against the wall. Third – Cut The Hole Mark the center of the circle from the hose with a small hole that you drill out.  Make sure that when you do this the bit you are using is going to be long enough and strong enough to make it through all the surfaces that you need to make it through.  Now you will insert the hole saw blade into this hole.  Create your hole with the hole saw using the circle that you drew on the wall as your pattern.  Work from the center of the hole out.  You will need to go just past the circle that you drew because this needs to be just a little bigger than the hose.  After this you may need the use of the masonry bit, it all depends on the material that the exterior of your home is made from.  In all try not to go more than 1/4 inch bigger than the size of the hole. Fourth – Vent Housing Attachment From the outside you will put in the vent housing.  There will be hardware included with your kit for you to use here too.  After you have ensured that it is straight in the hole and is secure test the flap so that you are sure that it will open when the air from the dryer creates pressure.  This can be tested with your finger. Fifth – Install Interior Vent Pipe and Hardware The last step is to go back inside and secure the hose from the dryer to the inside portion of the vent housing.  Use the caulking both inside and outside around the vent housing so that you can be sure that you are not leaving holes in your house for critters to get in or to allow the exchange of air when you are running your heating or air conditioning.

Although burst pipes, clogged drains, and running toilets generate constant plumbing demand, many professional and licensed plumbers do not enjoy a constant supply of customers.

A Guide to Installing Your Bathroom Vents

Any time that you take a bath or shower, your bathroom is almost guaranteed to get steamy.  This is because of the water evaporating and then cooling to form water again.  If you do not find a way to get the steam somewhere other than the bathroom, then you may end up with issues from mildew and mold in your bathroom.  An exhaust fan is one of the best ways to get the steam out of the bathroom.  The fan will draw out the moisture through the bathroom vent that is installed, and you will have less moisture in the room.  If you do not ensure that the air is vented outside, then you will just end up moving the mildew and mold to a different part of your house.

Things Needed:

  • stud finder
  • exhaust fan
  • wire strippers
  • wire nuts
  • both flat head and phillips screwdrivers
  • duct kit
  • electrical tester
  • jab saw
  • safety glasses

First – Picking a Fan

The number of fans available is astounding.  However, you are going to want one that is a minimum of 80 CFM.  That is cubic feet per minute.  Higher rates are preferred, but also cost more money.  Be sure to check the rating for noise on the packaging as well.  The most preferred is over 100 CFM and a low rating for noise.  However, these are the ones that are more expensive.

Second – Wiring

When you get your duct kit, there will be a wiring guide included.  The easiest way is to wire it into the light so that they will both come on simultaneously.  Prior to working with the wiring, you are going to want to be sure that there is no electricity running to it.  Locate the breaker and switch it to off, then check to make sure that it was the right breaker by turning on your bathroom light.  Use the wire strippers to strip the wires that you are going to need, and make the connections safe with the wire nuts.  Turn the breaker back on and make sure that the fan comes on and the wiring is correct.

Fourth – Mounting

You will want to try to mount the fan box to the joists of the bathrooms ceiling.  This will be done with a screwdriver and the provided screws in the kit.  If you cannot do that, then you will need to use the hangers that come in the kit.  Prior to getting everything completely attached, you will need to attach the vent hose to the box.  Then you will run it through the attic to either the roof or the outside wall that you have chosen.  Then, you will attach everything in place and put the trim in place for the fan.

Fifth – Vent Installation

With the template that is available in the kit and the jab saw, you will cut the hole for the vent in the exterior wall or the ceiling.  The outside portion of the vent should be screwed to the exterior wall.  Part of it will stick through.  Now, you will attach the vent hose and tighten it enough for it to properly stay in its place.  The vent should be covered so that the moisture can get out, but not in.  This also keeps debris from getting in.

A Guide to Organizing a Workshop

First: Clean

To begin with, you are going to need to get everything cleaned up.  Take everything that you have in there out, and this means everything.  Now that you have nothing left in there, you can easily clean everything up.  After it is all cleaned, you will work out a way to arrange everything before you put it all back in.  When doing this you should consider where things should be located to make working more efficient for you.

Advice: While you are going through this process, it would be a great time to get rid of anything that is no longer useful to you.  This will allow you more space and easier organization.

Second: Ceiling

This is an important step because of the fact that it will make your workshop a more homey and comfortable place for you to be working.  Take all the measurements that you are going to need to put a ceiling in, and then cut all of the pieces for it out of OSB.  Make sure that you mark on the OSB where the joists are going to be so that you have an idea of where to put the nails to hold it in place.  After this is all done, you are going to want to nail up battens so that you don’t have a lot of draftiness.  This will also improve the way that the area looks.

Third: Paint

When considering options for paint, you should go with something that is light in color.  This will help the area to appear cleaner at all times, and it will also leave you in need of less lighting because the lighter color will reflect light into more areas of the space.  If you are looking to get this over with quickly, then a sprayer that is powered by air will be your best bet.  Make sure that you have all the proper safety equipment when you are using a sprayer in an enclosed area for a large amount of painting.

Fourth: Lights

When trying to find the right lights for a workshop area, the best option is usually fluorescents.  This is because they generate a good amount of light without burning through a lot of energy, and they also burn cooler so that it is less of a fire hazard.  If you are just using light fixtures that are made to be plugged into an outlet, you can do the lighting arrangements yourself.  However, if you are planning to have your lights permanently wired in, then you should call upon the services of an electrician.  Any work lighting should be halogen or fluorescent.  This is because the incandescents can spark if they are broken, and even if they are not they will create heat.

Fifth: Workbench

When you are ready to install your workbench, you are going to want to make sure that you have planned for one that is large enough for you to do all the projects you will need to on it.  If you are wanting to be safe and cut down on the messes that can come from electrical cords, then it may be a good idea for you to put in a power strip that runs the entire length of your workbench.  To help with back and joint health issues, you should try to get a rubber mat to put in front of the workbench to stand on.

Sixth: Organization

When you are looking into a system for your organization, there are two things that you are going to want to think about.  The first is how much stuff you are needing to organize.  Make sure that what you are getting is large enough for everything that you have, and also what you may be accumulating in the future.  The second would be what kind of work is done in the area.  This is because the type of work will also determine some of the storage needs, as well as where the storages are located.

Seventh: Safety

Make sure that you are storing any chemicals that you might have in the proper container with all of the safety information still in tact on the container.  Also make sure that your storage for these is not anywhere near a heat source, and that it can be locked if necessary.  Make sure that you are using proper disposal tools, and that if there is anything that is going to be covered with oil or gasoline when it is finished being use, be sure to dispose of these things in the proper type of container that is for only that purpose.  Make sure that you have fire extinguishers available to you in any area that you may be working.  The ones that have an “ABC” rating are approved for use on all types of fires, so these would be the best to get.

The advantages of creating functional garment hangers

When you are out on your weekly or monthly store run, you may realize that you have run out of hangers for your clothes. You search the shops in that area, but can only find the plain and boring ones. At this moment, you may wish to consider making your won functional garment hangers, to ensure that your clothes hang properly and neatly, but you are able to store them in your closet and know that they are arranged neatly in a unique manner. In addition, you are able to give these items as gifts, and they should be appreciated thoroughly when the recipient looks in their own closet at the skirts, trousers, shirts or sweaters, and sees the hand crafted decoration you were able to spend the time over.

There are few materials that are needed for this small project, as you are simply renovating a drab instrument that would otherwise hang silently in your closet without attracting any attention. If you are able to acquire some fabric of varying styles, and attach them to shoulder pads that you have affixed to the hanger, then you will be able to create an exclusively designed article that will possibly outlast the clothes. It will also possess the outstanding qualities of being eye catching enough to be displayed prominently outside of the closet to attract the attention of any guests that may happen to be around.

There are many ways to update the hanger. Your creative ideas will be an asset to upgrading the individual hangers and using them in many different ways, and it can even be an opportunity to market some of your designs and boost your income by selling them to people who feel unable to make their own for various reasons.

With the notable advantages to undertaking a project such as this, you may find that it is useful to display some of your designs in your closet. Many people often become frustrated when finishing their laundry, as seeking out the elusive empty hangers is incredibly time consuming. With the distinctive designs on each one, you should easily be able to spot the place to put your item of clothing. The whole process will be wrapped up in no time, and this will leave your time free for more enjoyable activities you may wish to pursue.

There are also ways of turning your functional item into something that can be fun, too. Special events can be planned where bejeweled hangers can be used as featured decorations. As an example, you may wish to create costume ideas as a small scale replica of the original, and use them as puppets in a play you could design for a younger audience. Other inspirations can be gleamed from outside sources. A Halloween event may lead to a hanger being decorated with ghosts and goblins and other such monstrosities. Your hanger truly does not need to be plain an uninteresting when there is a wealth of useful thoughts and information there.
